Gray Iron Casting

Gray Iron Casting

Gray iron is the most widely used material in the casting industry, with annual production several times that of all other cast metals. The name is derived from the characteristic gray color of the metal partly due to the contained flakes of graphite within the microstructure. These graphite flakes result in excellent machinability, good wear resistance, and high vibration absorption. An experienced Gray iron foundry will have the capability to cast gray iron into complex shapes at a relatively low cost.

The various types of gray iron are most commonly designated by a class number, which indicates the minimum tensile strength in thousands of pounds per square inch. Ex.: A class 30 iron has 30,000-psi minimum tensile strength.
