Mechanical Properties of 60-40-18 Ductile Iron

60-40-28 Ductile Iron consists of a ferrite matrix with nodules of free graphite formed with a small magnesium addition.  It is referred to as 60-40-18 because it has a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi (pounds per square inch), a yield strength of 40,000 psi and elongation of 18%.

Applications and Benefits of 60-40-18 Ductile Iron

The strength and wear resistance of 60-40-18 ductile iron make it ideally suited for numerous applications across many different industries. For example, it is often used in the automotive sector for casting brakes and gear boxes. The oil and gas industry typically uses it to pipes and pipe fittings, where its durability and resistance to impact make for highly durable infrastructure. The ability of this metal to resist high temperatures also make it useful for use in steel mills, where it is often used for guide rolls and pinch rolls. Gears and pulleys used in power transmission applications also are frequently cast from 60-40-18 ductile iron, as well. No matter what the job calls for, customers across many different market segments count on Hiler Industries to provide them with the castings they need to get the job done.
