Ductile Iron Casting

Ductile cast iron is one of the most durable materials used for industrial purposes, offering exceptional strength, ductility and wear resistance. Compared to steel, ductile cast iron can typically provide better machinability. All of these qualities make it a popular choice for casting a wide range of parts and components.

Many of ductile iron’s advantageous qualities can be traced back to the unique nature of the graphite it contains. Rather than appearing as flakes as it does in gray iron, the graphite in ductile iron is spherical. The effect is caused by the addition of a small amount of magnesium to the molten iron. This gives it a higher resistance to impacts, elongation and wear.

Hiler Industries is your complete resource for ductile iron castings (ASTM A536 / SAE J434) that provide all the advantages of this material as well as the benefit of industry-leading expertise. We have all the equipment, knowledge and experience needed to produce the highest-quality castings for your particular applications. With our proven shell mold casting services, you can feel confident that whatever you ask us to create will meet your specifications and deliver the level of performance you expect.

The Benefits of Ductile Cast Iron

Thanks in large part to the unique spherical shape of the graphite it contains, ductile cast iron offers exceptional strength. For instance, it has a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi and a minimum yield strength of 40,000 psi. One potential trade-off, however, is the metal’s damping capacity. With a relative damping capacity of 0.14, ductile cast iron is significantly less capable of absorbing vibration compared to gray iron.

Despite the relatively low damping capacity, ductile iron remains a popular choice for casting a wide range of components. It can be used to cast couplings, rollers, crankshafts, flanges, hubs, sprocket wheels and much more. As a fully capable ductile iron foundry, we have the skill and ability needed to cast a wide assortment of grades, including:

  • 60-40-18 (BHN 187 Max)
  • 65-45-12 (BHN 156-217)
  • 80-55-06 (BHN 187-255)
  • 100-70-03 (BHN 241-302)
  • HiSiMo Ductile Iron

We also have the ability to create austempered ductile iron castings. These are cast using a specialized heat treatment that produces a high-strength material that resists wear.

Why Should You Choose Hiler Industries?

Hiler Industries has been producing high-quality metal castings for various industries since 1946. In that time, we’ve developed a strong reputation for innovation. We were among the first foundries to adopt shell mold casting, produce austempered ductile iron and integrate demand control management principles. We hold numerous industry certifications and awards, and we’re always looking for ways to improve the level of service we provide for our customers.
