White Iron Casting

Providing exceptional abrasive wear resistance and relatively strong compressive strength compared to other iron-carbon alloys, white iron is a popular choice for applications in numerous industries. It can be found in machine components that have to withstand a lot of wear and abrasion, such as in grinders, mill liners and pump impellers that have to move abrasive materials.

White iron is formed when the metal cools so quickly during solidification that carbon combines with the iron to form iron carbide, also known as cementite. Because it also contains relatively little silicon, there is less free graphite present in white iron. This gives the alloy its distinctive white coloration on the surface as well as its high wear resistance. However, the highly crystalline structure of the metal also makes it much more brittle than other forms of iron. This means the use of white cast iron is more limited, although its high corrosion resistance combined with its ability to resist abrasion still makes it useful in certain applications.

Hiler Industries is a leader when it comes to white iron casting, thanks to our extensive experience with this metal as well as our shell mold casting process. Our state-of-the-art equipment, industry knowledge and expertise combine to make us the best choice for white iron castings for your specific needs. You can choose us with confidence knowing that we will be able to live up to your expectations and deliver exactly what you ask us to create.

The Advantages of White Iron Casting

On its own, white iron is too brittle and difficult to machine, which makes it difficult to use for all but a small range of applications. However, additives such as chromium, nickel and molybdenum maintain white iron’s abrasion resistance while also making it more pliable for casting purposes.

The mechanical properties of white iron may limit its usefulness beyond use in mining equipment, but in those applications it performs exceptionally well. Because it’s relatively inexpensive compared to other metals, it also may be the most cost-effective material for you, depending on your casting. Our experts are more than happy to work with you to help determine if white iron is a good choice for your needs, or if you’d be better served choosing gray iron casting, ductile iron casting or any of our other products.

Why Choose Hiler Industries?

We’ve been the leaders in producing high-quality metal castings for various industrial applications since 1946. We take pride in our ability to innovate as well as deliver tried-and-true techniques that yield the best results for our customers. We were among the first foundries to utilize the shell mold casting process, as well as one of the first to produce austempered ductile iron and use demand control management principles for greater efficiency. Our numerous industry certifications and awards speak to our dedication to providing the best possible service no matter what the situation requires.
